8 Surprised Capybaras

Privacy Policy

Last updated

This policy explains what personal information 8 Surprised Capybaras collects, why we collect it, who else can see it, how long we keep it, and how you can ask us to delete it. It covers this website and our game Forest City.

Who is responsible for your information

8 Surprised Capybaras is the independent game studio that develops and publishesForest City, and is responsible for the personal information described in this policy. There is no separate publisher or parent company involved.

For any privacy or data-protection question, including a request to delete your information, email [email protected]. A person at the studio reads that inbox.

1. This website

This website is a set of static pages. It is built ahead of time and served as plain HTML, CSS and font files.

  • No cookies. This website does not set cookies of any kind, so there is no cookie banner to click.
  • No analytics or advertising. There is no analytics service, no advertising network, no tracking pixel, no social media widget and no third-party embed on this site.
  • No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for and no form to fill in. We do not ask you for any information in order to read these pages.
  • No third-party requests. Fonts and images are served from this domain. Loading a page here does not cause your browser to contact any other company.

Hosting and server logs

This website is hosted on Railway. Like essentially all web hosting, Railway's infrastructure processes the network requests needed to deliver pages to you, which involves your IP address and standard request metadata such as the page requested, the time, and your browser's user-agent string. This is technically necessary to serve the site and to keep it secure and available. We do not use this data to build a profile of you, and we do not combine it with anything else.

2. When you email us

If you email us for support, about a privacy request, or for any other reason, we receive whatever you put in that message: your email address, your name if you sign it, and the contents of the message itself.

We use it only to answer you and to fix the problem you wrote in about. Our email is provided by Google, so your message is stored on Google's mail infrastructure the same way any email to a Gmail address is. We keep support correspondence for as long as we need it to resolve your issue and to understand recurring problems, and we delete it on request — see Your choices.

3. Forest City and Epic Account Services

Forest City is in development and is not publicly released. No member of the public is currently playing it, and it is not processing players' personal information. The section below describes how Forest City is designed to work with Epic account sign-in. We will publish an updated, dated version of this section before the game becomes available to players outside the studio, and it will describe exactly what the released build does.

Signing in with an Epic Games account

Forest City is designed to let you sign in using an Epic Games account through Epic Account Services, so that you can play with other people. Signing in this way is a choice you make. Epic Games shows you a consent screen that names our studio and the categories of account information the game is asking for, and the game receives nothing until you agree to it.

What we receive

When you consent, we receive from Epic Account Services the minimum needed to identify you as a player and to show you to other players in the same game:

  • Your Epic account ID — the stable identifier Epic uses for your account. We use it to recognise you as the same player between sessions and to attach your progress and your place in a match to you.
  • Your Epic display name — so that you and the other players in your game can tell who is who.

We never receive your Epic Games account password, your payment details, or your email address from Epic Account Services, and we do not ask you for them.

Why we need it, and who can see it

We use this information to authenticate you, to save your game progress against the right player, and to run multiplayer matches. Your display name is visible to the other players in a game with you — that is the point of it. We do not sell personal information, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.

How long we keep it

We keep your Epic account ID and display name, and the game data attached to them, for as long as your Forest City player profile exists. If you ask us to delete your profile, or if you withdraw your consent through Epic and stop playing, we delete it — see Your choices.

Your relationship with Epic Games

Epic Games has its own, separate privacy relationship with you as the holder of an Epic Games account, described in the Epic Games privacy policy. This policy describes only what 8 Surprised Capybaras does with the information we receive. You can review and withdraw the permissions you have granted to individual applications from your Epic Games account settings.

4. Your choices and your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information, including the right to ask for a copy of it, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to object to or restrict how we use it.

You do not need to invoke a specific law to use these. Email [email protected] and tell us what you want done. We will ask you for whatever is needed to be sure the request is really coming from you — for a game account, that normally means contacting us from an address we can tie to the account, or confirming your in-game display name and Epic account ID.

We aim to respond within 30 days. There is no charge. If you are in the UK, the EU or the EEA and you are unhappy with how we have handled your request, you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

5. Children

This website and Forest City are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

6. Where your information is processed

The service providers described above — our website host and our email provider — operate internationally, so your information may be processed on servers outside your own country, including in the United States. We rely on those providers' standard contractual protections for transfers of this kind.

7. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. We will publish a revised version before Forest City becomes available to the public, and before we start doing anything with your information that this policy does not already describe.
