8 Surprised Capybaras
A small studio making unhurried strategy games. We are building Forest City — a turn-based city-builder you play with other people.
Our game
Forest City
Turn-based multiplayer city-builder for PC
In development
Forest City is a game about growing a settlement in the woods alongside other players rather than against a clock. Each turn you place a limited crew of workers, decide what your city can afford to build next, and trade into an economy that everyone at the table is pushing on at once.
It is designed for players who like board-game pacing: readable rules, real decisions, and no reflex tests.
Turn-based
Everyone gets time to think. Turns resolve in order, so a good plan beats a fast mouse.
Worker placement
A limited crew, more jobs than hands. Every worker you commit is a door you close somewhere else.
City building
Your city is the board. What you build shapes which moves exist on the next turn.
Shared economy
Resources are contested. Prices, supply and scarcity move because of what other players just did.
Forest City is in active development at 8 Surprised Capybaras. We are not announcing a release date, platforms beyond PC, or storefronts yet — when there is something real to show, it will appear here first.
The studio
8 Surprised Capybaras
8 Surprised Capybaras is an independent game studio. We work on a single project at a time and take it as far as it needs to go, which right now means Forest City.
The name is not a metaphor for anything. We liked that capybaras are calm, social and famously unbothered — which is roughly the pace we want our games to run at — and eight of them being surprised felt like the right amount of surprise for a strategy game.
We build and publish our games ourselves, so the studio you are reading about is the same one that ships the game, answers your support email and handles your data. There is no separate publisher behind us.
